Free IB points calculator
What will you get out of 45?
Your IB Diploma score is your six subject grades (1 to 7 each, up to 42) plus 0 to 3 core points from TOK and the Extended Essay, out of 45. You pass with 24 or more, as long as none of the failing conditions apply. Set your grades below to see your total and a rough US GPA.
Your six subjects
Drag each one to the grade you expect. Most students take three at Higher Level; tick HL to match yours (3 ticked).
TOK and the Extended Essay
Each gets a letter from A to E. Together they add up to 3 points.
When 24 points is not enough
The diploma is not awarded if any one of these is true, even with a high total. The calculator checks all of them except CAS and academic misconduct.
- Your total is under 24.
- You got an E in TOK or in the Extended Essay.
- You got a grade 1 in any subject.
- You got three or more grade 2s.
- You got four or more grades of 3 or below.
- Your HL subjects add up to less than 12 (best three, if you take four).
- Your SL subjects add up to less than 9 (or less than 5, if you take two).
- CAS is not finished, or there was academic misconduct.
Questions students ask
- How is the IB Diploma scored out of 45?
- Each of your six subjects is graded from 1 to 7, which gives up to 42 points. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are each graded A to E, and the pair adds 0 to 3 core points, so the top score is 45.
- How many TOK and EE points do I get?
- An A in both gives 3 points, and so does an A with a B. Two Bs, or an A or B with a C, give 2. Most other pairs give 1 or 0. An E in either one means no diploma, whatever your subject grades.
- What is the minimum score to pass the IB Diploma?
- You need at least 24 points, but 24 alone is not enough. You also need no grade 1, fewer than three 2s, fewer than four grades of 3 or below, at least 12 points across your HL subjects, at least 9 across your SL subjects, no E in TOK or the EE, and CAS completed.
- What if I take four HL subjects?
- Only your best three HL grades count towards the 12-point HL minimum, and your two SL subjects need at least 5 points between them.
- How do I convert IB grades to a US GPA?
- There is no official table, and US colleges recalculate GPAs their own way. A common reading treats a 7 as an A (4.0), a 6 as an A- (3.7), a 5 as a B (3.0), a 4 as a C (2.0) and a 3 as a D (1.0), then averages your six subjects. Some schools add 0.5 to 1.0 for HL classes. Use your school transcript if it gives a GPA.
- Is this calculator official?
- No. ExamSpine is not made or endorsed by the IB. The rules here are the ones schools and the IB have published since 2015, checked against several public sources. Your coordinator has the final word.
